Highland Parks Next Development
Development A Plan UnderwayIn Macomb or Canton townships, the groundbreaking for a new shopping plaza might not elicit a communitywide celebration. In Highland Park, the anticipated shovel ceremony at the Shops at Woodward Place later this month is expected to attract political and business leaders wearing their Sunday best.

At least four developers tried and failed to resurrect the site where the Sears department store departed in the mid-1980s. With the continuing help of HP Devco, the nonprofit development arm of the city, the Wayne County Land Bank and state Cities of Promise efforts, a $6 million plaza will rise up on a 40,000-square-foot brownfield site.

Michael Curis (front) has succeeded where others have failed. He and his sons Michael Curis Jr. (far left) and Anthony Curis (right) and partner Mark Thomas are building a $6 million plaza at the site of the former Sears department store.
